Does anyone doubt that Don Sorchych is a bigot? He supported the Aryan nation having their annual meeting in Cave Creek. Don’s clearly anti-Mexican, and his explanation of why a swastika cartoon in his paper wasn’t pejorative became pejorative. Dagos, Spics, Krauts, and Pollacks. The only thing Don didn’t say was the “N” word. But then, not many Blacks in Cave Creek, so Don really doesn’t have to make an issue about it.
We could rail against Don about being a racist, but as we were thinking about what to say to Don’s swastika neighborhood cartoon, we saw our Cave Creek, founded in 1870 sign and began to think about racism in a historical context. Let’s face it, Cave Creek wasn’t “found” in 1870. Humans have been living in this area for thousands of years. When white folks, predominantly Mormon Christian white folks say they found Cave Creek, they mean the U.S. Cavalry killed off all the Indians, and made it safe for the real humans- the white folks to live here. Even the name of out town, Cave Creek, is caustic. The Cave by the Creek is where the last Apache were killed. No wonder our town is filled with so much dissension and how appropriate that someone as racist as Don Sorchych would run the town’s paper.
The only thing missing in the Swastika cartoon are signs saying no Blacks, Mexicans, Indians, etc. Because “once off your driveway you’re in the land of the enemy!” What a dimwitted view of the world.
